Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Chris Sabo (born January 19, 1962) is a former Major League Baseball third baseman who played with the Cincinnati Reds (1988–93, 1996), Baltimore Orioles (1994), Chicago White Sox (1995), and St. Louis Cardinals (2001–03). (1995). He batted and threw right-handed, despite his 6’0″ height and 180 lb (82 kg) weight. He received his education at Detroit Catholic Central High School. He was initially selected by the Montreal Expos in 1980, but he chose to attend the University of Michigan rather than sign with the team. The Cincinnati Reds picked him in the second round of the 1983 amateur draught, making him the first player from Ohio to do so. Sabo also enjoyed playing hockey as a goalie, and he appeared in one game with the Niagara Falls Flyers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League during the 1979-80 season before deciding to devote his time to baseball and enrolling at a local community college. Sabo came into the game as a complete unknown, having spent the previous few seasons in the lower levels. However, in 1988, Buddy Bell was placed on the injured list to begin the season, and the Reds were in desperate need of a third baseman. Sabo filled in well and went on to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award with a.271 average and 46 thefts in his first season. After a disappointing 1989 season, Sabo returned to the Reds to assist them in winning the World Series. In 1991, he had his most productive season, setting career-highs in batting average (.301), home runs (26), RBI (88), hits (175), and games played, among other categories (153). Sabo was named to the National League All-Star team three times in his career, in 1988, 1990, and 1991. After a series of injuries restricted his playing time in 1992, his output plummeted dramatically. Sabo would never bat higher than.260 again, and he would never have more than 10 steals in a season again. In 1994, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles, where he suffered another injury-plagued season before splitting 1995 between the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Cardinals. With 1996, he played his last season in Cincinnati. His return to his hometown did not go as well as he had anticipated. This happened in July of that season, when Sabo broke his cork-filled baseball bat. Sabo has been suspended for seven games as a consequence of the incident.

Sabo is certain that he has never corked a bat in his whole life. He said that the bat in issue belonged to another participant in the tournament (whom he would not name). He said that his performance that season (3 home runs in 52 games) was in no way “an endorsement of the cork business. Sabo had a.268 batting average with 116 home runs and 426 RBI in 911 games throughout the course of his nine-year career. During Sabo’s rookie season in 1988, Reds manager Pete Rose gave him the moniker “Spuds,” noting a similarity to a bull terrier figure in Bud Light commercials called Spuds MacKenzie. Sabo was easily identified by his protective spectacles, which he referred to as Rec Specs (recreational specs). A year later, on July 17, 2010, Sabo was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, joining Pedro Borbón and Tony Mullane, who had already been inducted. The Cincinnati Reds handed out Chris Sabo bobblehead dolls to those in attendance on that particular night in Cincinnati.
